Wild Coast
The Wild Coast, Eastern Cape
Stretching along the Eastern Cape’s east coast, the Wild Coast is one of South Africa’s most untamed and stunning regions. Craggy cliffs, unspoiled beaches, hidden caves, and shipwrecks dot the coastline, while green hills and forests create a striking contrast. This largely untouched area offers a glimpse of traditional rural life, with round huts, stone houses, livestock roaming freely, and communities moving at their own rhythm.
Accessible via a mix of main and gravel roads, the region requires time to explore, but the journey is rewarded with spectacular scenery and a true sense of Africa’s raw beauty. The Wild Coast is also deeply connected to Nelson Mandela’s heritage. From his birthplace in Mvezo to his childhood home in Qunu and the Apartheid museum in Umtata, the area offers insight into South Africa’s history and the life of its most celebrated son.
