The turn-off to Mazambala from the Trans Caprivi Highway is approximately 3 km east of the police checkpoint on the Kwando River or about 4 km west of Kongola.

The main lodge consists of a thatched lounge/bar/restaurant on 2.5 meter high stilts with stunning views over the flood plain. Enjoy excellent meals and ice cold drinks while watching grazing antelope.

A 12 meter high tower with two viewing platforms offers sweeping views of the papyrus and reed lined river and its vast flood plain. Enjoy African sunsets and sip sundowners while watching animals coming to the river to drink.

Relax around nightly fires on the traditional "lapa" while listening to the beat of distant drums, grunting hippos and a chorus of bell frogs.

In addition a 15 meter long swimming pool adds to the enjoyment of a stay at Mazambala.

 

 

The Lodge

Mazambala has 14 double bungalows and one family bungalow that can sleep 4 people. In addition, several of the double bungalows can accommodate three people. All bungalows have private bathrooms with hot and cold running water. The bungalows are constructed the traditional way with bricks, reeds and thatched roofs. All are equipped with mosquito nets and ceiling fans, and are regularly sprayed with an odourless insecticide against mosquitoes.

Game Drives

Mazambala offers game drives in the Bwabwata National Park which is noted for its huge herds of elephants - herds of several hundred elephants are not uncommon. The park has a great variety of animals including 4 of the “Big Five”. Game drives start with a 10 - 15 minute cruise by boat down the river and then a transfer to a game drive vehicle for a game drive on land in the park. The game drive typically lasts about 4 hours, depending on the elephants. Elephants often block the road which results in interesting delays. Beer and cold drinks on the game drive are included in the price.

Boat Cruises

These are leisurely floats, lasting about 2 hours, down the crystal clear water of the Kwando River and its labyrinth of papyrus and reed lined channels. One can just about guarantee that people will see hippos and Lechwes, and of course lots of other game including crocodiles, elephants, etc. In addition the rare swamp antelope, Sitatunga, is often seen. And, of course, many beautiful birds. What people especially enjoy is the quietness and unspoilt nature on the river. Beer and cool drinks are included in the price.

Guided Nature Walks

A guide accompanies people for 1 - 2 hours on a walk through the bush explaining the traditional medicinal uses of the various, trees, plants as well as look for birds, antelopes, etc.

Bird Watching Tours

Mazambala and the Kwando flood plain are a real paradise for bird lovers. In the garden of Mazambala more than 30 different species are regularly observed. And, during a recent day trip 91 various species were seen. Bird watching tours are tailor made to the wishes of the participants.

Fishing

The Kwando offers excellent opportunities for catching the desirable Tiger game fish and other species such as Breem, Nembwe, Squeaker, Barbel, etc. Boat hire is available at the lodge as well as fishing gear and fishing licenses.
