DYER ISLAND
The island is sutated south of Danger
Point. Danger Point is also famous for the Birkenhead shipwreck, costing the
lives of 445 people in 1852. The nearby Geyser Island with its large seal
population is attracting the white shark.
Dyer island is a protected
nature reserve, this means that ships are not allowed to approached the
island in less than 500 metres except when having a permit to embark. Cage
diving is since 1998 controlled by Cape Nature Conservation. All operators
have to pay a licence which avoids illegal activities.
Dyer island 12km from Kleinbaai,
the closest land to the island. There are some building on the island but
only offer accommodation to researchers and rangers controlling the area.
Thousands of birds, penguin and the endangered Black Oyster Catcher live on
the island. Dyer island is in 1806 named after the Afro-American who was
collecting penguin eggs and guano to be commercially sold. Normally seals
eat penguins but not on Geyser Island. Strange enough, penguins and seals
live on this island in harmony. The African Penguin colony in Southern
Africa decreased the past decennia with a alarming 75%.
Dyer island is only 20 ha large
and 4 ha is taken by buildings. A jetty is build to allow visitors on the
island.
Our vessel is specially designed to enter the shallow
waters of the Kleinbaai. Passengers can take shelter during the cruise
inside the boat. It is possible to walk around the boat for the perfect
photo shoot, once the boat is floating on the water. From our side we
guarantee that the White Sharks do not get hurt from the outboard engine due
to the fact that the animals take a natural safe distance between the boat
and them. We only use bait to attract sharks once being in the water
with a cage. On that way you will never have approached a shark that close
ever before. |
