World Heritage:
-Fossil hominid sites in
Sterkfontein (1999). Early human existence in fossils between 4.5 - 2.5 million
years old and proof that fire was used about 1.8 million years ago.
-Greater St.
Lucia Wetland Park (1999). The largest estuary system in Africa and
the most southern coral reefs of the continent.
-Robben Island (1999), a symbol against racism and a triumph
to democracy. -Mapungubwe Cultural
Landscape (2003). Proof has been found that an ancient African culture was
active. -Ukhahlamba/Drakensberg Park
(2000). The highest mountain peaks south of the Kilimanjaro. Many San
(Bushmen) rock art sightings have been found, some more than 4000 years old.
-Cape Foral Region Protected Areas (2000). The Cape
Floral Region, one of the richest plant habitats on the planet. This region
has only 0.5% of the African surface but contains 20% of all plant species.
-Vredefort Dome (2005).
A meteorite impact crater of more than 2.023 million years old, till now the
oldest one found back on earth.
