Swakopmund, situated in the central Namib Desert, enjoys a pleasant summer
climate with mild temperatures and negligible rainfall. The Atlantic fog
rolls occasionally inland for up to 30 km providing the most needed moist
for desert fauna and flora including 80 species of lichen.
The town is surrounded by the Namib Desert. The word ‘Namib’ originates from
the Nama word meaning ‘vast dry plain’. The desert vistas are unforgettable.
Much of the surface between the town of Lüderitz and Swakopmund is covered
with spectacular dunes rolling back from the ocean towards the inland
plains. In the north, the dunes end at the Swakop River and the landscape
changes into gravel plains, interrupted by isolated mountain ranges called ‘Inselbergs’.
