NORTH WEST PROVINCE

North-West Province

This is a region of wide, hot plains.  In the past bushveld and Thorn trees covered it, but now it has become an important agricultural region.  Diamonds were discovered in Lichtenburg in the 1870's and a frenetic Gold Rush ensued.  This died down somewhat as a second gold rush started in the Witwatersrand.  Today, the world's largest Platinum mines can be found in the Rustenburg area.  San painting painted on rocks attest to the original inhabitants of this region, although through history, Batswana and later Ndebele tribes laid claim to this area, which encompasses most of the area referred to as Bophuthatswana before 1994.
