History
Camps Bay
is one of the most beautiful bays in the world - picturesque on the foot
slopes of Lions Head, Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles overlooking the
endless Atlantic Ocean.

Camps Bay
is named after Mr. Fredrick Ernst Von Kamptz who owned the
“Ravensteyn” farm in the years 1700.
The easiest
place to identify in Camps Bay is the Rotunda which is part of the Bay
Hotel. The Rotunda is dating back to 1904 and used to be the dancing
location in the area, roller skate, silent movies, boxing and sports events.

Another famous
location is the
Round
House, situated in the Glen area, once the hunting lodge from Lord Charles Somerset
in the 1800's.
Thomas Bain, a
famous name coming back in the Cape when it concerns building roads and
mountain passes. He established the road between Sea Point and Camps Bay
making use of the labour from prisoners. Victoria Road was opened in 1887,
in honour for queen Victoria's jubilee in 1888.

The two 12 pounder
canons on top of Kloof Nek, were placed there in 1782 by the East
Indian Company to be prepared for a possible British invasion.
Meanwhile the
canons got forgotten but fully restored in 1999 by marine officers who
placed them on top of the Camps Bay Drive.
Theatre on the Bay is
a special building dating back to 1899, originally the electrical power
station but today a famous spot for theatre fanatics.
