Stellenbosch, only 25 minutes driving away, was
the first town in the Cape Winelands, found in 1679 by Simon Van Der Stel,
the Cape Governor. After a visit to the region, he found fertile ground on
the banks of the Berg River. Land was granted in 1687 to the Free Burghers,
at the foot of the Peerlbergh (Paarl Mountain), a name given to the giant
granite rock when wet glistering in the sunlight. Shortly after that, Paarl
was found in 1690.
