Constantia: the roots of the South African wine industry are found
in the Constantia Valley and after 300 years still home to excellent wines.
It is a valley of contrasts; forests, mountains, luxury accommodation and
excellent restaurants, some with international status. The valley is named
by Governor Simon van der Stel after the daughter from Commissionar
Rijkckloff van Goens. After the death of Simon van der Stel in 1712, the
property was sold and split in three parts: Groot Constantia, Klein
Constantie and Bergvliet.
The major attractions are without any doubt the Groot Constantia
Wine Estate, the 'Grand Dame' in the area with important historical
interest.
Even after 300 years, the wine estate is still very active in producing
excellent wines. Many years ago, the estate produced wines for the great and
famous on earth: the French Sun King, Louis 14, Winston Churchill, the
Russian Tjaar, de sisters Bronté, Biesmarck and Napolean who is believed to
have asked as a last wish a glass of Constantia wine. |
