Durban - KwaZulu-Natal Province: the most famous beach destination in South Africa along the Indian Ocean. Big attractions in Durban are the Golden Mile, a 1 mile promenade with many shops and restaurants. The dolfinarium and the new Ushaka Marine World are top tourist destinations. Durban has a strong Eastern vibe thanks to the many Indians living in the city. The most famous citizen of the city is Ghandi. He lived in Kwazlu-Natal from1893 to 1914.

   

Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Natuur Reservaat

Both reserves joined one another in 1989 and belong to the oldest in the country. In the 96 000 ha reserve live the Big 5 (lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard and elephant). A conservation project to protect the rhino is in the meantime world famous. The rhino population is now a days over 2 000 animal (white and black rhino).

St. Lucia Nationaal Park

Popular holiday destination in the most south-eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal. Lakes, forest dunes, swamps, palm forest, mangrove forest and beautiful beaches form this World Heritage Site. The 60 km long 'inner sea' lies parallel with the coastline and is cut of from the ocean by dunes. A canal connects the estuary with the Indian Ocean. Salt and sweet water form a unique habitat for many bird species, hippos, pelicans, Nile crocodiles and flamingos. The Big 5 occur in the reserve as well.

 

Kosi Bay

The area around Kosi Bay is known for its pristine beaches, dunes and dune forests. The region is offering the best diving conditions in South Africa. Lake Sibiya is South Africa's largest sweet water lake and is part of the  Greater St Lucia Wetland National Park.

Zululand

In the hinterland and northeast from Durban, in a beautiful landscape with many hills, the traditional Zululand was once the powerful Zulu Kingdom of the famous Zulu king Shaka who established in the 19th century a well organised military structure.

Umhlanga Rocks

Small cosy town 15 km north of Durban. Kilometre long sand beaches are typical for the region.
