Oudtshoorn, with no doubt the ostrich
capital in the world. This peaceful town is situated in the northern section
of the Garden Route, in the Little Karoo which is a semi desert.
The ostrich feather industry knew a
boom at the end of the 19th century. This can today still be seen in the so
called 'Ostrich Baron Manor houses (Fosters Manor Guest House).
The biggest tourist attractions are
the ostrich farms and the Cango Caves. The Cango Caves are one of the
largest limestone caves in the southern hemisphere.
Other tourist attractions are the Cango Cheetah and Crocodile Ranch where
visitors can see from close by the largest cats on our planet (the only
white tigers on the African continent) and even make a plunge in a pool with
crocodiles.
The Barons Palace Hotel in
Oudtshoorn reveals to her guests an era of affluence and opulence. The Hotel
was Built at the turn of the century by a wealthy Ostrich Baron.
