The story of the Belvidere Manor begins in 1830
when ground was granted to George Rex, a young timber merchant. Henry Duthie,
a Scot, married in 1833 George's third daugher, Caroline and bought the
estate for £750 from his father-in-law. The couple built a cottage in
april 1835 after the birth of their first child, on the place where the
present 'The Bell' is. The original cottage had brick walls and the present
wine cellar was the barn.
The cottage became in 1848 too small for the family who had in the
meantime 12 children. The family moved into the new cottage in 1849. The
second son, Thomas, had built in the 1870's a second floor.
Guests can dine in the
historic Belvidere House and enjoy one of our cellar wines while overlooking
the Knysna Lagune.
